Aquinas International Academy Unlock a World of Opportunities with AIA

China, 1st Oct 2024 – Nowadays, social media is widely used by companies and leagues to expand their reputation and make their products or games more attractive. Athletes also benefit from the functions of social media. Therefore, my topic today is to analyze the impact of social media on athlete branding, including the definition and functions of social media, as well as both positive and negative impacts on athlete branding with examples. Finally, I will provide some recommendations for athletes using social media.

Definition: Social media refers to the content production and exchange platform on the Internet based on user relationships. Social media is a tool and platform used by people to share opinions, insights, experiences and opinions with each other, which mainly includes social networking sites, micro-blogs, WeChat, blogs, podcasts and so on.

The main functions of social media are that:(it is just my personal statements)

1.To enhance cultural exchange and communication

2.To provide information

3.To promote business development

The benefits of social media for athletes are mainly reflected in expanding the spread of sports, enhancing the participation of sports, improving the effectiveness of sports marketing, and increasing the interaction between athletes and fans.

1.To expand the spread of sports: social media provides a convenient platform for the spread of sports. By posting sports-related content, people can learn more about different sports and competitions, also increasing awareness of sports. For example, athletes and clubs can share their daily lives and achievements with fans by Posting photos and videos of training and competitions on social media, thus attracting more people to follow and participate in sports.

2. To increase sports participation: social media offers the opportunity to interact with sports-related topics and get more people involved. By engaging in discussions, likes, comments and so on, people can better express their concerns and opinions about sports. In addition, sports games and challenges held on social media platforms have also stimulated enthusiasm and increased participation in sports improving the effectiveness of sports marketing .

3.Increased engagement: Social media makes it easier for athletes and fans to interact. Athletes can use social media platforms to post behind-the-scenes footage of training and competition, and share their lives and experiences with fans, thereby enhancing emotional connections with fans. NBA coaches point out that social media has deprived today’s athletes of their mystique and has also brought them closer to the public and increased their influence.

The main disadvantages of social media for athletes include privacy breaches, online bullying, information overload, the spread of fake news, and harassment and hate speech on social media.

1.The popularity of social media raises privacy concerns. Athletes open their private lives on social media, and personal information is easily obtained, which provides opportunities for criminals, who may obtain the private information of athletes through social media, and then threaten the athletes for money.

2.  Social media tends to encourage verbal violence. Fans have disputes over which teams or players they support, which often escalate into nasty verbal attacks on social media and reflect negatively on athletes ‌1. In addition, the rise of social media has also led to a shift in focus, and athletes have to face a variety of information and pressures in the virtual world outside of competition. Some athletes are given too much attention, which may have a negative effect on their psychology, which in turn affects their performance ‌1.

3. The proliferation of social media and the explosion of information has led to the spread of a large number of fake news. This fake news may mislead fans’ opinions and judgments, affecting their normal cognition of sports events ‌2. Meanwhile, harassment and hate speech on social media have also cast a negative light on the sports world. Some athletes have been left frustrated and hurt by targeted attacks on social media, and some have even opted out of social media ‌2 as a result.

Here are some suggestions for athletes using social media: Athletes receive a lot of attention, so it’s important to be mindful of their words and behaviour. If someone speaks negatively about their character in front of fans, it can cause a lot of trouble. Therefore, athletes should focus on sharing encouraging and optimistic messages or content related to the brands they sponsor. Otherwise, it can be very distracting, especially for athletes.
